Jause Break in Vienna:
A Guide to Coffee and Cake
Cafe 7*Stern
Siebensterngasse 31, 1070 Vienna
Mon-Sat: 9-2, Sun 9-12
Cafe 7*Stern is located at Siebensternplatz (Seven Stars Square) in Vienna's hip 7th district. The cafe is a lively place filled with people meeting for coffee with friends, working diligently on their laptops, and reading through well-worn novels. In addition, during the spring, the cafe's Schanigarten, an outdoor seating area in front of the shop, is shaded by flowering cherry trees. The cafe offers a variety of vegan options, including the popular vegan lunch bowl and a selection of vegan cakes, in addition to a list of non-veggie options, as well. In the evening, feel free to catch a concert here or just to grab a drink.
Jonas Reindl
Währinger Str. 2-4
1090 Vienna
Mon-Fri: 7:30-21, Sat: 9:30-21, Sun: 10:30-18
This cafe, named after the Viennese slang for Schottentor, sits directly across from the main building of the University of Vienna. Because of this, Jonas Reindl is a popular location with students, and people of all ages can be found here frantically working on papers or taking a study break with friends. It's location is easily accessible by a number of tram lines and the U2 metro line. As with most cafes on this list, the cakes are to die for, with my recommendation being the lemon torte.
Treubleiben
Kirchengasse 20, 1070 Vienna
Mon-Fri: 17-2, Sat: 10-2, Sun 10-16
This cafe's name urges us to "stay true" to our addiction to coffee and brunch. Although only open as a cafe on the weekend, Treubleiben offers a nice range of coffees and breakfast options for an affordable price for the frugal amongst us. During the morning and early afternoon, the cafe is quiet and filled with people taking advantage of the wifi or having a lazy breakfast with friends. In the evenings, Treubleiben is a popular neighborhood bar with American favorites such as mac-n-cheese and burgers.

Vollpension
Währinger Str. 2-4, 1090 Wien
Mon-Sat: 7:30-22, Sun: 8-20
This cafe is affectionately known as the "Granny Cafe" by locals because of its unique staff of older men and women. All of the cakes are baked by grandmas from their family recipe books, handed down from generation to generation. If you miss having a good homemade cake, this is the place for you. While the grandmas are cooking, the grandpas in the cafe help to seat everyone and take orders. The decor really completes the feeling of being at grandma's house because of the tasteful antique furniture and artwork throughout the cozy cafe.
Cafe Schwarzenburg
Kärntner Ring 17, 1010 Wien
Mon-Fri: 7:30-midnight, Sat-Sun: 8:30-midnight
Cafe Schwarzenburg is the oldest cafe on our list of Viennese favorites. Of the older cafes in Vienna, this one is rather affordable, and the oldest located on the Ringstraße. The mirrors and beautiful metal and woodwork are very typical of the Jugendstil architecture that Vienna is known for. This traditional cafe is a great place to come with out-of-town guests who crave the Viennese cafe experience. That being said, I recommend coming here at least once on a Sunday to enjoy a coffee and a cake as a pianist plays some beautiful music.
Phil
Gumpendorfer Str. 10 - 12, 1060 Wien
Mon: 17-1, Tues-Sun: 9-1

Kärntner Ring 17, 1010 Wien

Mon-Fri: 7:30-midnight, Sat-Sun: 8:30-midnight
This cafe located on Gumpendorfer Straße is also the home to an independent bookstore. Sitting on the sofas around the tables here, don't be surprised to find people perusing their newly purchased books. The cafe has amazing hot chocolate, as well a plethora of teas and coffees. This cafe's funky vibe is heightened by its fun decor. Beware though, the wifi is sometimes spotty, so if you're looking to do work here be sure to bring some books or printouts, just in case.
